Strangers in Lisboa
A work in progress that emerged from a month-long art residency in Hangar, Lisboa that led to me wandering around and following strangers to see, to be, and to learn about the city. Inspired by Sophie Calle’s Double Game and Annie Ernaux’s touching insights of the trivial, I trail individuals and willingly get lost in the process. To add another layer of intrigue, residents, citizens, tourists, cleaners, security guards, policemen, women in hijabs who barely speak a word of Portuguese or English, among others are invited to direct me, take pictures of me. Each a stranger in the eyes of the other… Yet, this brief exchange offers a glimpse of intimacy that transpired over the simple gesture of being with another.
